Sand bar in the Gunnison River, upstream from Blue Mesa Reservoir, Gunnison County, Colorado

• Description: This sand bar formed upstream of the Blue Mesa Dam on the Gunnison River because the dam has interrupted water flows and allowed sediment to become trapped. Depending on sedimentation rate, valleys behind dams may completely silt up and no longer function as reservoirs.
